This is an anlysis of the neglected novelette, St Irvyne, by the poet P.B. Shelley which explores its key Rosicrucian themes - including especially that of the mysterious and dominating Magus, a key recurring image in European literature - and relates its production to an Etonian schoolmaster who may have influenced the youthful Oxford student, Shelley, but who has escaped critical notice hitherto.
